Madan Mohan Malaviya
Madan Mohan Malaviya (1861?1946), an eminent Indian scholar, politician, and educational reformer, was a key figure in the Indian independence movement. He held four presidencies of the Indian National Congress and founded the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha. Recognized as "Pandit" and "Mahamana," he championed modern education, co-founding the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in 1916, one of Asia's largest residential universities. Serving as BHU's Vice Chancellor from 1919 to 1938, Malaviya also excelled in law, journalism, and social service. He defended freedom fighters, opposed untouchability, and advocated for the rights of the oppressed. His efforts led to the creation of the Ganga Mahasabha and the promotion of scouting in India. His legacy endures through BHU and his influence on India's socio-political landscape. In 2014, he posthumously received the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor.
