It is my great pleasure to present this thoroughly updated and enlarged edition of the treatise to my dear students and respected faculty members of the Department of Civil Engineering of various Indian Universities,Institutions, Polytechnics and practising surveyors. Important questions from the examinations of various Indian Universities and Institution of Engineers (India), have been solved and included in respective chapters. I express my sincere gratitudes to the users/lecturers/students of this treatise for sending their valuable suggestions which have now been incorporated in this edition. In spite of every care taken to check the numerical problems, with a calculator, few mistakes might have occurred due to over-sight . It is likely that few mistakes of composing also might have occurred. I shal be highly obliged if these mistakes/omissions are pointed out by the readers for improving the subsequent edition of the book.
