In the political history of Bihar, some personalities emerge not only as leaders, but also, transformative forces who have served to shape the destiny of the state. Jannayak (the people’s leader) Karpoori Thakur, who is often referred to as ‘common politician’ or ‘the common man’s leader’, is indisputably one such great personality. This book, ‘Beacon of Socialism: Karpoori Thakur’, attempts to shed light on his life, political journey and the indelible impact left by him on the socio-political scenario of Bihar and outside it. \n\nKarpoori Thakur was not only a political figure; he was a person who was deeply connected with the pulse of the common man. This book attempts to capture the essence of his leadership-style, which is distinguished by simplicity, approachability and a deep understanding of the issues that affect the public. Thakur’s ability to empathise with the struggles of the average citizen endeared him to the people on a socio-economic level, due to which he gained the title of ‘Jannayak’ or ‘common politician’.
Mamta Mehrotra is an Academician and social worker, who has fought for the justice to be granted to women oppressed socially. She is also a counsellor and activist, who has helped solve around thousand cases. As an administrative head of a public school, she is also associated with S.C.E.R.T. (State Centre for Education Research and Training), Bihar and written English course books for first to ninth standards and four course books in Hindi. She writes for magazines and has been an editor of few magazines.
