This is the updated and thoroughly revised edition of the popular textbook, fondly dedicated to the memory of Dr CC Chatterjee who had written the book in the Independence era of country in 1948. Dr Chatterjee was the faculty at Calcutta Medical College. This book was widely read throughout the country and South East Asia for over four decades and helped medical and paramedical students to have firm understanding of the functional aspects of human body. Dr Chatterjee passed away in 1984 but his book still remains in the minds of millions of readers who read it with passion. He wrote a complete integrated physiology textbook with anatomy and biochemistry encompassed altogether in the era when there were no computers or any advance technology for printing. The integrated approach of incorporating anatomy, physiology and biochemistry in this single textbook was marveled by all academicians and was one of the salient features of the book of all the eleven editions up to 1984.\n\nProf Nitin Ashok John, as editor of the book, took the challenge of editing the eleventh edition to the prescribed existing syllabus and twelfth edition was brought out in 2018. He is former Head, Department of Physiology, Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, UP, and Indira Gandhi Medical College, Puducherry. He completed his MBBS from Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sewagram, Wardha, and MD from Indira Gandhi Government Medical, Puducherry. He is Fellow of Higher Education Academy, UK. In addition, he has received fellowship from Royal Society of Biology (FRSB), London, UK; fellowship from Royal Society of Public Health (FRSPH), London, UK; and fellowship of Academy of Medical Educators (FAcadMEd), Cardiff, UK. He has also completed his Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Law and Ethics from NLSU, Bangalore; DIH from Annamalai University; Postgraduate Diploma in Hospital Administration from Algappa University; and MA in Public Administration from Nagpur University. He has 29 years of standing experience in medical profession which includes 25 years of experience as faculty and four years as medical officer / honorary doctor. He has been the UG?PG assessor for Medical Council of India from 2011-2019 and is the UG?PG assessor for National Medical Commission, New Delhi, from 2019 onwards; President, Association of Physiologists of India, UP Chapter, 2019-2020; Finance Secretary, Association of Physiologists of India, 2014-2016; and member of various international and national scientific societies. He has conducted and supervised around 30 research projects, including 12 funded projects. He has to his credit more than 100 research papers published in national and international journals and has written 10 textbooks and practical books in physiology. He has delivered more than 50 guest lectures at national and international levels at various scientific meetings. He is a dedicated academician, excellent orator, well respected teacher and administrator, as well as an author of high eminence.
