This book is a collection of 2 papers on communal and pan-Islamic trends in British India. The contributors are well-known historians and political scientists who have made communal and Muslim politics a subject of their special study. The papers, representing varied points of view, focus on different aspects of the Khilafat and Non-cooperation movements, on communal riots, on communal consciousness in literature, on the part played by religion in ‘Muslim politics’, and on the historiography of communalism in India. Regional studies on Assam and the Central Provinces cover areas left untouched by earlier studies on?the?Khilafat?movement?and?on?communal?relations. Most of these papers were first presented at two seminars organized by the Department of History, Jamia Millia Islamia, in 1979 and 198. The book should be valuable to libraries and to all those interested in exploring the dynamics of communalism in twentieth century British India. About the Author Mushirul Hasan (1949-218) taught Modern Indian History at the Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. He also served as Director-General of the?National?Archives?of?India. \n

Professor Musirul Hean is an internationally renowned historian, prolific author and former Vice Color of Jamia Milia Islamia University, Dell Professor Hasan has also authored Partners in Freedom Jamia Milia flamia (Niyogi Books, 2006); Muting Memin Niyog Books, 2009), and The Aval Punch Wit and Humour in Colonial North India 0007) and Wit and Wisdom: Pickings from the Parsee Punk (2012) as part of the Punch series brought out. He has when extensively on the Partition of India, on communalism and on the histories of Marie Souds Ads Professor Hasan was the elected Pen of die Indian History Congress in 2002. In 2007, he was awarded dhe Padma Shri by the Cover of India and in 2010 the Ordre des Paces Fradimiques was conferred upon him by the Fu Covernment. He is presendy the Director Gece of the National Archives of India.
