Delimitation and State Reorganisation: Better Democracy in Bharat

  • Format:

In modern democracies, the principle that each vote has equal value is fundamental to ensuring fairness in elections. However, India’s electoral system today does not fully reflect this ideal due to an ongoing freeze on delimitation that has lasted for 50 years. This has created disparities in representation between states, with significant differences in population sizes across regions—particularly between the more populous states in the north and the relatively smaller ones in the south. This issue is often referred to as the "North-South problem."\n\nTo address this imbalance and strengthen Indian democracy, two key reforms are necessary: first, the implementation of delimitation based on the most recent census data, and second, a redrawing of state boundaries to create a more equitable distribution of population. These changes are interconnected and must be carried out together to ensure a fair and just electoral system. The successful execution of these reforms would lay a strong foundation for a more balanced and effective governance system in the future.
