Two lines of verse that have rhyme and meter are called couplets. This volume titled “ English Couplets” is a continuation of the previously published work called “ Encyclopaedia of Quotable Couplets”(2005) and was written over a period of fifteen months.

The earliest recorded couplets were written by Thiruvalluvar in Tamil Classics and was called Thirukkural. It expressed universal truths in couplet form. Scholars generally date this work to the second century B.C.
\n\nCouplets by unknown authors in English Literaure were found in the fourteenth century. Geoffrey Chaucer (13431400) was the first to use couplets consistently in his work.
