During the Second World War Ian Fleming (1908-1964) was assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence, Admiral Godfrey, and in that role played a key part in British and Allied espionage operations. His first novel, Casino Royale, was published in 1953 and this was followed by a new Bond every year until his death. His books have sold over 100 million copies.
