The present work consists of a comprehensive palm-leaf manuscriptcombining several originally separate Oriya texts of thefifteenth/sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, compiled by the DeulaKaranas, the temple scribes of Puri in the late eighteenth or theearly nineteenth century. They provide firsthand and mostauthoritative information on land endowments to religious shrinesthroughout the medieval Orissan period, on rituals and duties ofpriests and temple servitors and, most important, on legendary andvarious historical and cultural events during the reign ofGajapatis. The present compendium is a unique source for the studyof the cult of Jagannatha and the culture and history ofpre-colonial Orissa.
