Operation Ganga (Hindi)

  • Format:

As war clouds began to loom over Ukraine, thousands of Indian students living there found themselves in a precarious situation. Some students left Ukraine in time, but many remained in the hope that there would be no war or if there was, it would not affect their studies. However, hope turned into disappointment when all students were advised to leave. Operation Ganga was a campaign conducted by the Government of India to evacuate Indian citizens, mostly students, during the war. The Government of India appealed to all the countries of Europe, the Indian diaspora, Indian embassies, the corporate world, and social and religious organizations to provide all possible support in moving Indian students back home from the troubled area. Farish was studying medicine in Sumi. He and his friends were helped by people at the Indian embassy to move through the Ukraine border into Poland. From Poland, transit and food was provided free of cost by the Indian government. The repatriation of Farish is but one success story. This book is the account of the sufferings of the students and their harrowing journeys, and the role of the Government of India and numerous Indians in rescuing them.

Like many bureaucrats across India, Tarun Pithode, a senior officer of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), had his hands full as the Covid pandemic ravaged the country. In The Battle against Covid, Pithode recounts his experiences and struggles, and those of his colleagues in different states, while managing the crisis especially during the first and second waves. He outlines the strategies employed by various authorities to understand the virus and contain its spread. He also details the travails of the migrant workers, as millions of them covered thousands of kilometres on foot to make their way back home, fleeing cities that suddenly had no place for them. But there are stories of heroism too, of doctors, police officers, administrators and civilians putting their lives on the line to save fellow citizens.Through all this, Pithode shares with us the profound lessons he learnt as an administrator and as an individual. Taking us behind the scenes, The Battle against Covid is an invaluable record of how our bureaucracy stepped up to manage a crisis that affected almost every aspect of our lives.
