The first edition of this volume was published in 1981. Ten of the original 19 chapters were presented as papers at a conference on 'Religion in Modern India' at the University of Iowa in 198 organized by the editor.The second edition, published in 1989, dropped a couple of original essays and added chapters by N. Gerald Barrier on the Sikhs, Eric J. Sharpe on the Christians, and John R. Hinnells on the Parsis. In this fourth revised edition a new essay on Jainism by James F. Lewis has been added. \n
Robert D. Baird is Professor Emeritus, History of Religions, University of Iowa. Author of Category Formaiton and the History of Religions (1972), Indian and Far Eastern Religious Traditions (1972), and Essays in the History of Religions (1991). Professor Baird has also edited and contributed to Methodological Issues in Religious Studies (1975) and Religion in Modern India (first published in 1981, fourth revised edition in 25). He has also contributed articles in the areas of methodology and the study of religion, modern Indian religious movements, and religion and law.
