This book is divided into two parts. Part I includes six types of movements - peasant, backward classes, sectarian, tribal and women's. There are four papers on religious and sectarian movements among the Hindus and Muslims. One paper points out parallels between the backward classes here and Black movements in the U.S.A. in their fight against discriminations. Part two contains an extensive bibliography supporting the six types of movements and concepts. \n

M.S.A. Rao was Professor of Sociology in the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi. Author of several books, Professor Rao was awarded, during his lifetime, the Sarat Chandra Memorial Medal by the Asiatic Society for his outstanding contributions to cultural anthropology.
