The Mahabharata of Krishna-Dwaipayana Vyasa: Translated into English Prose from the Original Sanskrit Text (Vol. V)

  • Format:

The Mahabharata of Veda Vyasa is one of the greatest war epics in the world after Iliad and Odyssey. Mahabharata is the story of the feud between two clans – Kaurava and Pandava. This English translation was originally published by Pratap Chandra Roy, a Calcutta-based bookseller, who owned a publishing house and printing press from 1883 to 1896. The fourteen parvas were published by Pratap Chandra Roy, and the last four parvas by his widow Sundari Bala Roy. The English version of the Sanskrit epic was composed at the behest of Dr Reynold Rost of the India Office Library, who was in dire need of an authentic and complete?English?version?of?the?original?text. The fifth volume of this version comprises three parvas, Jamvu-Khanda Nirman, Bhumi, and Bhagavad Gita Parva. Jamvu-Khanda Nirman Parva provides the science of the military in ancient India. It explains the just war theory, in which conditions of the rules of war are laid down by an agreement between Kauravas, Pandavas, and Somahas. It also covers the rules of war such as, how to treat the injured soldier in the enemy’s camp when the enemy surrenders, etc. Bhumi Parva discusses nations, nations without rulers, and races such as dark-skinned, fair-skinned, and mixed-coloured people. This parva touches on cosmology, eclipses, and shapes of the sun and moons. Bhagavad Gita Parva is the cream of Mahabharata, as this part is considered the ‘bible’ of Hinduism in the world. This part is didactical, containing the discourses by Lord Krishna about spirituality based on the?principles?of?Sankhya?and?Yogic?tradition. About the Author Kisari Mohan Ganguli was an English translator. He was the first to translate the Mahabharata into English. He was awarded the first Honorary Literary Person and Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire-Companion?(CIE)?by?the?British?Crown?for?his?great?works. \n
