Trees of South India: (TBC subtitle)

  • Format:

Trees of South India is a result of over fifty years of dedicated work of restoring and\n\nresearching the forests and native trees of the Coromandel Coast of South India, all\nthe way to the lower reaches of the Western Ghats, and on to the hillocks of the\nEastern Ghats-a contiguous woodland until a few thousand years ago. Geographically,\nthis range covers the states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana,\nKarnataka and, to some extent, Odisha. Within this vast span there are a number of\ndistinct forest types adapted to variations in rainfall, soil type, altitude and fauna.\nContaining deep botanical knowledge and a wealth of information, this detailed and\neasy-to-use pictorial guide will help readers identify 190 ecologically important species\nof native trees and shrubs, including many rare and threatened plants such as satin\nwood, poplar-leaved ardor, Indian kino, red sanders and rosewood, etc. With growing\nawareness of the significance of native forests in the fight against climate change, this\nbook is a powerful resource for amateur naturalists, plant explorers and\nconservationists interested in learning about indigenous flora and working towards\ntheir preservation.

Landscape architect trained in France, Marie Demont has spent the last fifteen years in Auroville working with plantation and afforestation projects. As a result of her association with Auroville Botanical Gardens she is involved in large-scale ecological restoration, with a focal point on threatened native species. Her enthusiasm for nature leads her to photograph and document the ecosystem which emerges in the Auroville bioregion.
